Detection of winds below 1 mile per hour is critical when there is danger of overspray contamination.
Accurate measurements not possible with tube windsocks.
Lower wind speeds are not visible in older style tube windsocks because the air moves into the opening and moves out of the opposite end before there is enough force to lift and fill the sock's main body.
Once the tube windsock is full, additional wind speed is not accurately portrayed because now the sock is full, and any additional force exerted within the sock or along the sides and body, are minimized by the air force within the windsock.
Variables in wind speed and direction are not usually visible in an ordinary sock design. Wind coming from a direction other than the hoop opening cannot enter the sock until it turns into the correct position.
